Receiver Jordan Williams-Lambert re-signs with Saskatchewan Roughriders

American receiver Jordan Williams-Lambert has re-signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Jordan Williams-Lambert is returning to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Riders announced on Wednesday that the American receiver had signed a one-year contract extension. He was eligible to become a CFL free agent on Feb. 9.

Williams-Lambert signed with the Riders in 2018 and went on to be named the West Division’s most outstanding rookie. In 2018, he recorded team-high 62 receptions while recording 764 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

He then signed with the NFL’s Chicago Bears in 2019, dressing for three pre-season games and registering five receptions for 49 yards.

He returned to the Riders in 2019 after being released by Chicago and dressed for three games, making five receptions for 57 yards.

Earlier Wednesday, the Riders also announced American receiver Demarcus Ayers and defensive back Christian Campbell had both opted back into their contracts. Ayers and Campbell had opted out of their CFL contracts in 2020 to pursue opportunities in the NFL.

Ayers was a seventh-round selection (229th overall) in the 2016 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of the University of Houston. He played in two pre-season games and two regular-season contests with the Steelers. Ayers had six receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown in the regular season before being waived by the Steelers prior to the 2017 season.

Ayers also had stints with the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots before spending a portion of the 2019 season with the Alliance of American Football’s San Antonio Commanders. He originally signed with the Riders on Feb. 19.

Ayers starred at Houston, playing three seasons (2013-15) as a wide receiver and returner while dressing for 40 games. He had a career total of 142 receptions for 1,687 yards and nine receiving touchdowns. He also returned 71 kickoffs for 1,613 yards and a touchdown and 33 punts for 312 yards and a touchdown.

Campbell, 25, was a sixth-round pick (182nd overall) by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2018 NFL draft. He was waived after the 2018 pre-season and then had stints with the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers before signing with the Riders in 2020.

Campbell spent four seasons at Penn State, recording 102 defensive tackles and three interceptions in 44 games. He signed with the Riders on March 14.

The Riders have released American receiver Kenny Stafford, who was eligible to become a free agent on Feb. 9

The Riders acquired Stafford from Edmonton from Aug. 5, 2019, for returner/running back Christion Jones. Stafford didn’t dress for a game with the Riders in 2019.

Prior to being acquired by the Riders, Stafford had caught 30 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns with Edmonton.

Stafford played in 70 career games with Edmonton, the Calgary Stampeders and Montreal Alouettes with 2,626 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. He also shared in the 2015 Grey Cup championship with Edmonton.
