'It seemed like a natural fit' - Rinaldo

Her last day with the BIA is Sept. 5 - she starts her new job with TEDC Sept. 8

Noella Rinaldo is ready to begin a new chapter.

“When I saw the job posting, it really encompassed what I’ve been doing most of my life and my career,” said Rinaldo, who has served the last 10 years executive director of the Downtown Timmins Business Improvement Association.

“I was an entrepreneur for 20 years, coming to the BIA for 10 years, being a councillor for 10 years, you know having community economic development that really encompasses my work at the BIA and my work as a councillor.

“When I saw the posting it just seemed like a natural fit. It was a big decision for me because I knew it, being a city position I would have to give up my position at city hall and leave the BIA.”

Her last day with the BIA will be Sept. 5.

She starts her new position with Timmins Economic Development Corporation on Sept. 8

Rinaldo has enjoyed working with the BIA and seeing many projects and ideas come to fruition.

“I’ll still be dealing with BIA but just in an overall picture … Obviously a strong downtown is a big part of the economic development for the city,” she said.

“So we’ll still be working with the BIA. I will still be working with the new executive director of the BIA.”

Who that executive director will be remains to be seen.

“You will see the job posting going up for next executive director for the BIA in the next few days. I’m leaving the office in good position and I’m going through the files in the last few days to see what we’ve accomplished and what’s there is sustainable. It’s easy to replicate and they can continue a lot of the programs.”

She said there are ongoing projects and programs that can continue until the next executive director is hired.

“With COVID-19 happening … it has kind of slowed some projects down and things are being done differently. Like Welcome to Timmins is being done virtually and we have our annual general meeting which they’ll have to decide if they want to do that virtually. There are things that are going to be done differently in the next few months but I think that’ll be good for the new person to transition in.”

The BIA has been functioning with two full-time employees — Rinaldo and executive assistant Stacey Martin. Their efforts have been supported with hiring of interns.

“They won’t have trouble filling my position as there are great executive directors out there but I don’t know if the new person will be as kinetic as I am. I like to have three to four projects on the go at the same time,” Rinaldo asid.

“Somebody new may need some time to kind of get their feet wet and see what they want to do — with the board’s approval of course.”

Rinaldo is very excited about taking on this new role and said she is familiar with many of the projects or programs run by TEDC as she’s collaborated with them in the past.

“I’ve worked on some of them. The agricultural portfolio I’m very familiar with it. I’ve been on the Northeast Community Network (NeCN) and I sit on the Ontario Farmers’ Market board so I’m very familiar with the agricultural portfolio. Also with the immigration project, I am a co-chair on that. I’m excited to work more on a full-time basis but I won’t know until I start what the other projects are. But I know there are some great economic development projects.

“When you’re looking at the mines and all the announcements of the mines coming in, employees are going to be a big part of that picture so the employers’ counsel, the immigration project will be really big and filling those positions. We need to be sure that we have an educated, trained population for these new mines. If they want to start hiring, we’ve got to be sure we have people ready for them. So that is what community development is, kind of supporting economic development and making sure that the community is there to support it. That’s really up my alley.”
