Former Saturday Night Live star Jason Sudeikis has played some of the most memorable comedic characters on television.
But instead of spinning off one of his favourite late-night bits to set the stage for his TV return, it was Ted Lasso — a character created by NBC Sports to help promote English Premier League soccer — to whom he gravitated.
Fleshed out from Sudeikis’ NBC commercials, Ted Lasso (out this Friday on Apple TV+) tells the story of a wise-cracking college football coach from Kansas who is hired by an English soccer club to lead their team back to glory on the pitch, despite having no knowledge of the game.
As he arrives in England, he’s greeted by a ravenous fan base and a team in disarray. “Heck, you could fill two Internets with what I don’t know about football,” Ted quips to the hostile British press.
But, along the way, Ted’s positive attitude will win over the disgruntled players, the fans and the team’s acerbic new owner Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham).
