Knecht connects with a grand slam to power Maple Leafs to Intercounty win over Kitchener

Locked in a pitcher’s duel and with his team trailing by a run, Marcus Knecht changed all that with one swing. The former Blue Jays prospect stepped up with the bases loaded and sent a towering fly ball over the left-field fence for a grand slam to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to an 8-6 win over the Kitchener Panthers in Intercounty Baseball League action Wednesday night at Dominico Field at Christie Pits. Knecht stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning with Toronto (6-5) down 2-1 . The Leafs outfielder drove the third pitch he saw over the fence to clear the bases and put his team up 6-2. Down 8-2 heading into the ninth, Kitchener (6-3) cut the lead to two runs off Mateo Kekatos on a three-run homer by Riley Davenport and a single by Stepen Whalen, but the Toronto reliever retired the next two batters to nail down the win. Kyle Perrett (2-0) tossed two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for the Leafs. He gave up just two walks and stuck out three. Marek Deska went five strong innings, his only mistake coming on a two-run homer by Liam Wilson in the fourth inning. Jacob Douglas (1-1) was tagged with the loss for the Panthers, giving up four runs on two hits and three walks in 1.2 innings. Kitchener starter Liam Devine went four innings, the lone damage coming on a homer by Jordan Castaldo. Devine gave up five hits and two walks and struck out four. The Leafs return to action Friday night when they hit the road to take on the London Majors. Game time is 7:35 p.m.
